Editorial Policy

This page explains how we research, write, review and update information about online gambling for readers in New Zealand. Our aim is to make complex terms, risks and regulatory information easier to understand, not to encourage gambling or suggest that winning is likely.

Regulatory information checked: 20 October 2026

Our editorial principles

Our work is guided by four commitments: accuracy, clear evidence, editorial independence and player protection. We explain important limitations, distinguish confirmed facts from unverified claims, and do not present gambling as a way to earn money or solve financial problems.

Our editorial team is responsible for what appears on this website. Information about our contributors is available on the Authors page; details about the publication itself are on About Us.

How we create and check content

Reviews, comparisons and explanatory guides require different types of evidence. Before publication, material claims should be traceable to a reliable source or an identifiable test. Where sufficient evidence is unavailable, we explain the limitation rather than filling the gap with an assumption.

Stage What we do What readers should see
1. Research Identify the reader's question and collect relevant operator terms, regulatory records and technical documentation. Relevant facts and links to primary sources where useful.
2. Verification Check material details against current sources and document the scope of any first-hand testing. Clear distinctions between tested, source-verified and unconfirmed information.
3. Editorial review Check factual consistency, clarity, geographic relevance, risk statements and unsupported promotional language. Readable content that explains restrictions, not just benefits.
4. Maintenance Revisit time-sensitive claims when terms, regulations or credible new evidence change. Meaningful corrections and verification dates when available.

What we check in different types of content

Content Key information we examine Common limitation
Casino reviews Regulatory status, terms, payments, account verification, player safeguards, support and user experience. Information from an operator is not proof that a withdrawal has been completed successfully.
Bonus guides Eligibility, wagering basis, eligible games, maximum bet, maximum cashout, deadlines and withdrawal conditions. Offer terms may differ by account, location or date.
Comparisons and ratings Safety concerns, documented features, restrictions, significant complaints and relevant NZ availability. A position in a comparison is not a guarantee of safety or regulatory approval.
Game guides Provider information, rules, advertised RTP, volatility where available, and gameplay features. RTP settings or game versions can vary between operators.

Explore how we verify a claim

Choose a topic to see which evidence matters and what we will not assume.

Bonus terms: the headline is never enough

  • We look for: eligibility, whether a deposit is needed, the amount and basis of wagering, maximum stake, excluded games, expiry, identity checks and cashout restrictions.
  • We do not assume: that “no deposit” means “no payment ever”, or that a displayed bonus balance can be withdrawn in full.

Licensing: jurisdiction matters

  • We look for: the legal operator, relevant regulator, licence status and whether the operator is authorised to serve New Zealand customers under the rules in force at the time.
  • We do not assume: that an overseas licence is a New Zealand licence or that an application, auction result or licence claim equals regulatory approval.

Payments and identity checks: published rules versus tested outcomes

  • We look for: supported currencies, possible NZD conversion, minimum and maximum withdrawals, fees, processing times, identity requirements and account restrictions.
  • We do not assume: that an advertised payout speed is a verified result, or that registration without an ID check guarantees withdrawal without verification.

Games and RTP: verify the actual version

  • We look for: the game's provider, mechanics, applicable RTP information, limitations and whether claims come from the developer or a tested version.
  • We do not assume: that one RTP figure applies across every casino, or that a demo session proves how a real-money session will end.

Our sources and evidence labels

We prefer original records wherever possible: New Zealand government and regulator publications, licensing registers, operator terms, payment documentation and game-provider specifications. Independent reporting and player complaints can provide useful leads, but we assess their reliability before repeating a claim.

Evidence level What it means What it does not prove
First-hand tested A specified step was performed directly, with a recorded outcome and, where relevant, a date. That every feature, account or future transaction behaves the same way.
Verified from a primary source Information was matched to an official document, regulator or published rule. That the same outcome has been observed in a live user account.
Operator-reported Information was supplied by the casino or its representative. That the claim has been independently confirmed.
Not independently verified Available evidence is insufficient for us to confirm the claim. That the claim is necessarily false.

We do not describe a registration, bonus activation, deposit or withdrawal as personally tested unless that specific step was actually completed and documented. If a feature cannot be accessed from New Zealand, we identify that limitation rather than presenting a hypothetical experience as a completed test.

How we approach comparisons and ratings

Where the website publishes comparisons or ratings, we assess factors relevant to the question being answered. We give particular attention to material safety risks and restrictive conditions: an attractive bonus or extensive game library does not cancel out serious problems elsewhere.

Area Questions we consider
Regulatory and player protections What is the operator's verified status? Are key safeguards and complaints procedures clearly documented?
Terms and fairness Are important restrictions conspicuous, understandable and consistent across relevant documents?
Payments and KYC Are fees, verification steps, limits and withdrawal conditions disclosed accurately?
Games and usability Can readers understand what is offered, which information has been tested and what remains unconfirmed?
Support and complaint history What reliable evidence exists about response quality and unresolved material complaints?

A rating is an editorial assessment, not a licence, a guarantee of payouts or a recommendation to gamble. If comparable information is missing, we may withhold a score rather than create a misleading impression of precision.

New Zealand regulations and promotional restrictions

New Zealand's Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 came into force on 1 May 2026. The licensing framework is being introduced in stages. As at 20 October 2026, the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) states that online casino advertising is prohibited and expects the licensed regime to become fully operational in 2027.

We check the distinction between an operator's availability, its overseas licences and its New Zealand regulatory status. We do not describe a casino as NZ-licensed unless that status can be verified through the relevant New Zealand authority. We also assess whether material could constitute prohibited advertising, including advertising involving affiliate arrangements as defined by the Online Casino Gambling Regulations 2026.

We do not use editorial wording or disclosures as a substitute for complying with advertising restrictions. Our approach to any commercial relationships and permitted advertising is explained in our Advertiser Disclosure. For the current position, consult the DIA's advertiser guidance and player guidance.

Editorial independence and conflicts of interest

Editorial conclusions should be based on evidence, not on what an operator wants us to say. Commercial partners must not approve factual conclusions, remove justified criticism or purchase a higher editorial score. If a commercial relationship is relevant and legally permitted, it must be clearly identified, with further details provided in our Advertiser Disclosure.

Our editors are expected to raise personal or financial conflicts of interest. Where those conflicts could affect impartiality, the affected contributor should not make the final editorial decision on that material.

How we use AI-assisted tools

AI tools may assist with outlining, drafting, translation, language editing and organising research. They are not a substitute for checking primary sources or performing real tests. A human editor remains responsible for reviewing factual claims, geographic relevance and the final text before publication.

We do not present AI-generated descriptions as personal testing, invent screenshots or support conversations, or create fictional first-hand results for bonuses, deposits, withdrawals or customer service.

Responsible gambling in our editorial work

Our content is intended for adults aged 18 or over. We avoid claims that gambling is risk-free, guarantees profit or can address financial difficulties. Where bonuses are discussed, we explain the limitations that materially affect the offer rather than focusing only on its headline amount.

Updates, corrections and reader feedback

Bonus conditions, payment options, regulatory status and other material information can change. We prioritise corrections that could influence a reader's understanding of cost, eligibility, safety or legal status. A cosmetic edit is not the same as rechecking the underlying facts.

Situation Editorial response
A material factual error is reported Review the evidence, check an authoritative source and correct or qualify the claim if necessary.
An operator changes its terms Update affected details and, where the change matters, identify the date of the recheck.
A claim cannot be confirmed Label the uncertainty, remove an unsupported statement or suspend the relevant assessment.
A significant published conclusion changes Consider adding a correction or update note explaining what changed and why.

To request a correction, use our Contact page and include the page URL, the disputed statement and supporting evidence, if available. We review submissions but do not guarantee that every requested change will be made.

Editorial transparency: common questions

Does “reviewed” mean you have personally tested every feature?

No. A review can combine direct testing, authoritative documents and other research. We distinguish the steps actually tested from claims checked through published sources. A reviewed casino is not necessarily one where we completed a deposit or withdrawal.

Is an overseas gambling licence the same as a New Zealand licence?

No. We report the issuing regulator and jurisdiction separately. An overseas licence does not itself establish that an operator holds a New Zealand online casino licence or can legally advertise to New Zealanders.

Can a payment or commercial relationship change an editorial rating?

It should not. Commercial arrangements do not justify changing a factual assessment or concealing important restrictions. Our separate Advertiser Disclosure explains how relevant commercial relationships are handled.

How can I challenge information on the site?

Send us the article URL, the disputed passage, a short explanation and any supporting document through Contacts. We assess the evidence and correct or clarify substantive errors as appropriate.
